I've been seeing many posts about PRIDE today. And I want to admit my feelings of confusion. I am completely confident that sharing the "why " about our views on topics is one of the only ways we can truly understand each other. Sharing stories are an exercise in empathy. So, empathize with me for a moment.
I live in the Bible Belt. I am a Christian. I grew up being told homosexuality was wrong because the Bible said so. When I got older and started forging my own faith and beliefs, as we all do, I wanted to know why. Because it just isn't fair!!! Why would God tell you who you love is wrong?
I don't believe people choose to be gay. I don't look at a crowded room of men and decide which one I'm drawn to. It just happens. So why would being drawn to one person over another be wrong?
As I looked for answers, I wanted to find a loophole. I wanted to find something that told me it was ok. I wanted it to be ok, because to me, it just seemed awful that something as crucial and precious as romantic love could make God angry.
But I didn't find a loophole. I found some verses (that I already knew) saying homosexuality is wrong. I found some others, which I saw in new light, saying that God created a man, and when that man longed for a companion like himself, God made him a woman. And I saw that Jesus compares himself to a husband protecting and cherishing his wife (us).
So, I'm left feeling confused. I think, based on what I understand, that God created men and women specifically for each other. But I don't want people who don't feel attracted to the opposite sex to be wrong. But I can't say that I think it's right, either.
I've read some people's ideas about this topic, and every time I HOPE this will be the one that proves to me that it's ok! And I haven't found one yet... Maybe I will. Maybe I won't.
My faith is founded in the notion that I will never understand everything, so I don't expect to. I fully expect to have lots of questions and changing opinions during my life. And I don't believe God is mad about that. He is God. I am human. My dog knows a lot of things, but he doesn't understand the internet. I understand a lot of things, but God knows a depth that I will never comprehend.
Ok, sorry for the rambly bit, back to PRIDE. So, I can't say that I agree that homosexuality is ok. But my friend posted something thoughtful (as she does) that helped me see a place where I can stand. She said PRIDE didn't start to celebrate being gay, but to celebrate "our right to exist without persecution". That's something I can join in celebrating!! Because whether being gay is a sin or not, God isn't angry. He has no desire to persecute people who are gay, because Jesus was perscuted for them. God doesn't look at someone who is gay and see SIN written on their forehead. He sees MY SWEET CHILD on it! I can celebrate people being treated fairly because they are God's children. And I can treat all people fairly because we are God's children.
While I'm not 100% sure about how to react in every situation, or the answer to every question about homosexuality in our culture today, I am sure that I can join in the rejoicing that more people are treating each other better.
If you read this far, remember at the beginning how I asked you to empathize with me? I'm asking again. I feel like not many people are confused, like me, on this issue. So if I just went against everything you believe, take a second to empathize before we discuss- because I would really like to discuss.
To all my friends gleefully showing and proclaiming their PRIDE, I love you and I admire your bravery. If you are unfriending everyone with a rainbow post, I love you and I admire your loyalty to your beliefs. (But if you're really doing that, you might want to consider calming it down.) I will be somewhere in the middle. Proud of people who can look at someone else and share love with that person, without needing an explanation of their actions. Proud of people who can have a simple and childlike faith in each other. Proud of people who can ask each other questions, not know the answers, and still walk side by side.
